Jeff is a guy I met not long after I just arrived in Ann Arbor last summer. I can’t remember where he is actually from but he seems to have stayed in many places before he came to Ann Arbor. We first met in a Japanese-learning meetup club. Both of us were the first time attending it. We had a small group chatting using English and Japanese at that time, including two Japanese, one from mid-east, Jeff and me. We can’t actually using Japanese to chat ‘cause Jeff didn’t know Japanese at all, and I am not good at it either. Anyway, we still had a nice conversation and exchanged phone numbers after the activity. At that time, Jeff just came to this small village for a very short time as I did, and was eager to make new friends. He doesn’t use facebook or any other social media at all, so he would just use text. He is more than forty years old and just quitted his last job and wanted to find a new place to start over again. For some reasons, he gave Ann Arbor a shot. Hasn’t found a job yet, he was so exciting to explore this place and asked us out to go kayaking. It was still late summer at that time and we had a great time in the huron river. Those Japanese boys are so childish that they threw everyone into the river except Jeff. Jeff is so skillful so he didn’t fall but threw one into the river instead. The memory is still fresh for me now, but after that time we never went out together again. It is such a pity. After that time I only went out with Jeff one more time, having dinner and hanging around in the central campus. Then, I started to be very busy because of the course work and my research. Jeff also didn’t ask me out again, so we just lost the contact for about three months. Suddenly in early Feb, Jeff texted me again and asked me if I’m doing good. “Hey just realized haven’t talked in a while. How are you doing?” That’s what he wrote in the text. After several texts we decided to go to see the new coming out movie black panther. We planed to see the movie on the first day of the lunar new year. It turned out to a disaster. He came and picked me up at 9. In the car there was a woman driving, and Jeff was just sitting next to her. I got in the car and found out there was another girl in the back seat. After a while I finally realized that the woman who was driving is Jeff’s new girlfriend, and the other girl is her sister. The girlfriend’s name is Julia and her sister’s name is Margo. Julia seems to be very nice. She is very kind and smiles a lot. Then I also learned that actually they were moving to Florida next weekend, so this might be the last time we meet. Just three months we didn’t hear from each other then everything is out of my expectation. He said he couldn’t stand for the winter in Michigan anymore so he was just going to move to a place with hot sunny beach. Feeling sad for his leaving, but also glad that he found a new job there. We arrived at the cinema at 9:30. The movie was 10:20 so we were too early. But when we tried to get the ticket, Margo found that her credit card was missing. Due to some unknown reasons we didn’t get any ticket but just left and headed back to their house to find it. Their house is so far away that we drove at least 20 minutes to get there. At the end Margo didn’t find her credit card, nor did we get the tickets even though Jeff asked his friend to buy for us. So they just drove me home and ended this strange meaningless adventure. They kept apologized to me for this ridiculous trip. Jeff told me that we might hangout again next week just before he left and I said of course, any time! At that time I didn’t know that it will become much more than just hanging out again. …to be continued.
